Mission to Seafarers Launches Shore-Based Maritime Welfare Index
The Mission to Seafarers has launched the Shorebased Happiness Index (ShoreHI), extending its welfare measurement framework to maritime professionals working on land for the first time. The new index mirrors the methodology of the charity's established Seafarers Happiness Index, which has tracked crew welfare aboard vessels since its inception.
The ShoreHI aims to capture wellbeing and job satisfaction data from shore-based maritime workers, creating a comprehensive picture of welfare across both sea and land-based segments of the industry. The index follows the same survey-based approach that has made the Seafarers Happiness Index a recognized benchmark for crew welfare measurement over nearly a decade.
The launch addresses a gap in welfare monitoring within the maritime sector, where shore-based professionals — including port workers, maritime lawyers, surveyors, and shipping company staff — have lacked dedicated wellbeing measurement tools. The Mission to Seafarers indicated the new index will help identify welfare gaps and inform support policies across the broader maritime workforce.
Data collection for the inaugural ShoreHI report is expected to begin immediately, with the charity leveraging its global network of chaplains and welfare officers to reach shore-based maritime professionals worldwide.
